seatkid Posted December 3, 2008 Report Posted December 3, 2008 Is this a continuation of the dead dog thread? Quote
Rallim Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 My run on pump has not worked properly for nearly a year now, you can sometimes still here it turning slowly, it definitely needs the brushes doing. The most noticeable thing in the winter is that it affects the auxiliary heater, I replaced the glow plug in mine over a year ago, it worked fine initially but since the pump has slowly died I've noticed it comes on initially but will turn off after a few mins if the car is standing still, where as originally the aux heater would be going like the clappers whilst I scraped ice off and drove off.... so I think it assists water flow through the heater when you are not moving... maybe  I meant to look at mine this summer but like many jobs it didn't happen!!! gregers Posted December 4, 2008 Author Report Posted December 4, 2008 rallim, yes thats what mine is doing, the booster is spooling up and then shuts down after only a few minutes, have noticed that when i put the heater on full the temp gauge starts to drop so i think you are right about the water flow, had read about hot spots etc thats why i asked if it isnt working correctly will it cause damage to the engine? Rallim Posted December 5, 2008 Report Posted December 5, 2008 I don't honestly know if it causes problems when the engine is running. I've found that the booster heater will generally spin up and stay running if you are driving. If the booster heater is not working then the engine really does struggle to reach 90 celcsius... and now I have an oil temperature gauge, the oil temp as well. I'm guessing it assists in keeping the water flowing through the aux heater to keep the aux heater from shutting down thinking the car is upto temp, but also helps prevent hot spots when the engine is turned off. I can't see how in normal running there will be hot spot problems with the engine, after all the 1.9tdi is used in plenty of other vehicles without an auxiliary pump. Hopefully someone who really does know will point us in the right direction... at the moment it irritates me but if it really is causing problems then I will get off my bum and do something about it... ^_^ Gordon... I would not say i am someone who 'really knows', I think that would be the VW designers! -But here is my 2 pennies worth... ^_^ I have changed brushes twice on my Galaxy in 18 months! It is used as a Taxi so engine is on and off all the time, hence brush wear is high for me! Without doubt the Booster heater needs this pump to work properly. When engines are hot and switched off, the temperature in the top half of the engine increases for a couple of minutes, this has been well proven over many years to cause damage to the engine head, I believe it can warp over the years due to repeated excessive heat, causing head gasket failure. The after run pump eliminates this problem, so for an hour or two's work I would get your pump working! Another long term damage thing to think about is engine wear from cold starts, most engine wear happens when the engine is below normal temp, so a working booster heater may well help extended engine life... gregers Posted December 6, 2008 Author Report Posted December 6, 2008 well ive fixed it,followed the instructions in the faqs(cheers jonhr)and he is right about them bloody spring clips took me an age to get to them/off,borrowed a couple of brushes out of my cheap copy dremel and i used some sand paper to give them a sand down, put everything back together again and hey presto it was whirring a good en,there was a load of crap inside the unit, old powder/dust from the old brushes,i have taken a couple of photos but am having trouble uploading them at the moment, the instructions in the faqs are pretty much idiot proof(they must be ive just followed them) :) ^_^ i dont have much confidence on working on cars,i started about 1pm and finished about 4pm,but ive also had to replace a headlight bulb and as you know thats a simple job especially the air filter side. :) thanks for the replys guys.
